A materiality exploration into bauxite residue, the waste generated in the creation of aluminium. It sets out to explore the potential use of this waste stream. To help reduce the volume of bauxite residue stored in legacy sites worldwide and to contribute to the aluminium industry circular economy.
The project set out to research the possibility of reclaiming a waste stream and producing an aesthetic based artefact. Collaborating with an industry partner - Alcoa of Australia – Redmud Ceramic takes waste from the aluminium process and combines it with clays to create a ceramic material used within the building industry.
The Redmud Ceramic material is represented as a physical fireproof external wall tile to be used in a propositional wall cladding system designed to protect houses from the intense heat generated during bushfires.
